Multi-Utility New Connections
Working on behalf of a large house builder BTS undertook a multi-utility review of a number of development sites to obtain new connection estimates and identify new points of connection requirements. It was necessary to ascertain each scheme’s capacity requirements and whether there was sufficient supply within the area to ensure the delivery of the scheme.
Background
New connection quotations / budget estimations and identification of points of connections required in respect of four sites.
Site 1, outline planning permission for
- 550 residential dwellings
- 19,192sqm commercial use
- New school
- 1,975sqm community use
Site 2, outline planning permission for
- 450 residential dwellings
Site 3, outline planning permission for
- 820 residential dwellings
- 10,355sqm commercial use
- New school
Site 4, outline planning permission for
- 2,000 residential dwellings
- 1,200sqm commercial use
- New school
Challenges
- Due to the stage in the development process, limited information was available for standard new connection applications.
- Fact that electricity lines and gas pipes also require diversion on two of the sites needed to be considered to ensure a coordinated approach to both new connections and diversions.
Solution
- Establishment and agreement of various assumptions where required, including energy demand calculations
- Completion of budget estimation applications to the District Network Operators (DNO)
- Extensive liaison with the DNOs
- Liaison with and sourcing of quotations from Independent Connection Providers (ICP)
- Liaison with specialist surveyor colleagues at BTS regarding the necessary utility diversions
Result
- Early indication of known capacity issues.
- Identification of point of connections.
- Provision of new connection quotations / budget estimates.
- Coordinated approach taken to the necessary new connections and diversions.
